Lesson 210 of 300
Respect similarities and differences in bodies, appearance, ability, family, language, culture, belief, identity, experience, and ways of living.
Help the child understand that all people share human needs and dignity while differing in appearance, bodies, abilities, families, communication, culture, belief, identity, experience, and preferences.
"People are alike in important ways. Everyone needs safety, food, water, rest, care, relationships, and dignity. People also differ in skin tone, hair, facial features, body, ability, language, communication, family, culture, belief, clothing, food, and experience. Melanin is one pigment that helps create natural differences in skin colour. Skin colour does not determine intelligence, kindness, or worth. Some people use wheelchairs, hearing devices, glasses, prostheses, communication tools, or other supports. Ask respectful questions, accept no answer, and do not stare or touch equipment. People are different in many ways and equal in human dignity." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Show diversity in ordinary life rather than a lineup only. Include people with visible and non-visible differences in active roles. Avoid stereotypes, pity, rankings, tokenism, or one cultural standard.
Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
