"A space mission begins with a question. Scientists define measurements, while engineers design a spacecraft, instruments, power, communication, navigation, and safety systems. Hardware and software are tested before launch. During cruise, teams track the spacecraft and make small trajectory corrections. Some missions use a planet's gravity to change speed or direction. Ground antennas send commands and receive telemetry and scientific data. Radio travels at light speed, but great distances still create long delays, so distant spacecraft cannot be controlled instantly. Instruments measure selected properties, data are stored and transmitted, and scientists calibrate, analyse, compare, publish, and archive the results. Space missions turn carefully planned measurements and delayed communications into evidence about distant places." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use a complete lifecycle and visibly delayed communication. Avoid joystick-style instant control, live mission feeds, magical route changes, unverified raw images presented as conclusions, or one-person mission control.
