What your child will discover

Help the child recognise a smoke alarm and practise a simple evacuation routine: alert, stay low when smoke is present, follow the planned exit, go to the meeting place, and remain outside.

The spoken lesson

"A smoke alarm warns that there may be fire or dangerous smoke. Go immediately with your caregiver. Do not hide and do not collect toys or belongings. Smoke rises, so stay low when smoke is present. Follow the safe planned route and leave the building. Use exit stairs rather than a lift during a fire. Go directly to the family meeting place outside. Stay there with the caregiver. Never return inside for a person, pet, or object. Firefighters need to know if someone may still be inside. Alarm, get low, get out, meet, and stay out." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use calm practice scenes with no visible active fire. Keep the smoke-alarm sound optional and reduced in volume. Avoid surprise sounds, flames, panic, darkness, or timed escape competition.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
