What your child will discover

Help the baby observe that light makes objects easier to see and darkness means there is less light. Connect daylight, lamps, evening, night, and shadows without presenting darkness as frightening.

The spoken lesson

"Light helps your eyes see people and objects. Daylight comes from the Sun, but we never look directly at the Sun. A lamp can make a room brighter. When there is less light, the room becomes darker and objects are harder to see. Night is usually darker than day. A shadow appears when something blocks light. Darkness is not something to fear. It simply means there is less light. Caregiver, turn a safe lamp on. Light. Now turn it off slowly. Dark. Light and darkness change what our eyes can see." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Avoid turning the entire screen completely black. Keep controls visible and accessible. No flashes, strobes, or abrupt transitions.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
