What your child will discover

Help the child understand that a rule is an instruction or standard for behaviour within a particular activity, place, group, or system. Teach that good rules should have a clear purpose and that rules can be discussed, improved, or changed.

The spoken lesson

"A rule is an instruction for a particular place, group, activity, or situation. Rules may support safety, fairness, cooperation, and care for shared things. A library may use a quieter voice rule, while a playground allows louder play. A game has rules that help participants know what to do. A useful rule explains who it applies to, where it applies, and why it exists. A rule is not automatically safe or fair merely because someone says it. Never follow an instruction to hide harm, enter danger, or break a body-safety rule. A useful rule has a clear purpose and protects or organises the activity." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use context-specific examples and explain reasons. Avoid obedience scoring, authoritarian imagery, punishment threats, or suggesting that every adult command is valid.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
