During a star's stable main-sequence life, nuclear fusion in the core changes hydrogen into helium and releases energy. Stars differ in mass, size, temperature, colour, luminosity, composition, and age. Hotter stars generally appear blue-white, while cooler stars appear orange or red. Luminosity describes how much energy a star emits, while apparent brightness also depends on distance. A light-year is a distance, not an amount of time. Starlight can reveal temperature, chemistry, movement, and magnetic activity. The Sun is a star that looks especially large because it is nearby.
