"A word or sign carries meaning. It may name a person or thing, describe, show an action, connect ideas, ask a question, or perform another language job. Words and signs can combine into phrases and sentences. A sentence or complete utterance expresses a full message in its context. Order and grammar help show who did what, where, when, or why. Languages organise sentences differently, and signed languages use movement, location, face, and body grammar. Context helps us understand words with more than one meaning. Words or signs combine through patterns to create meaningful messages." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use speech, sign, writing, pictures, and AAC equally. Avoid English-only grammar claims, sentence scoring, shame about child grammar, or requiring speech.
