Understand that a refrigerator keeps many foods cold and slows spoilage but does not make food safe forever.
Help the child understand that a refrigerator is an appliance that removes heat from its interior and keeps many foods cold. Cold storage slows the growth of many microbes and slows spoilage, but food can still become unsafe or spoiled.
"A refrigerator keeps many foods colder than the room. Cold slows the growth of many tiny microbes and slows food spoilage. Milk, yogurt, cut foods, cooked leftovers, and other perishable foods may need refrigeration. The caregiver covers food, separates raw foods from ready-to-eat foods, and checks labels and storage time. Cold does not make food safe forever, and food can be unsafe even when it looks normal. Ask before taking food. Close the refrigerator door completely. The refrigerator is not a hiding or climbing place. Cold slows spoilage, and the caregiver checks the food." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use realistic storage without brand labels. Avoid magical freezing effects, child food-safety decisions, refrigerator-opening games, or food-waste shame.
