Understand that urine and stool belong in a potty or toilet when the child is developmentally ready.
Help the child understand that the body makes urine, also called pee, and stool, also called poop. A potty or toilet is the appropriate place for these forms of body waste when the child is developmentally ready to use it.
"Your body makes urine, also called pee, and stool, also called poop. A potty or toilet is a place for pee and poop when a child is ready. A caregiver can show you the potty and explain how it works. You do not have to use it before your body and skills are ready. Later, you may tell the caregiver, lower your clothing with help, sit securely, and wait. The caregiver helps with wiping, dressing, flushing, and handwashing. Accidents are part of learning and are never naughty. The potty is ready when your body and you are ready." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use fully clothed, modest imagery. Avoid graphic body waste, toilet humor, reward charts, shame, urgency countdowns, or competitive toilet training.
Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
