What your child will discover

Help the child understand that food gives the body energy and materials for growth. During early infancy, babies receive human milk, infant formula, or another medically advised feeding plan. Around six months, when developmentally ready and guided by a caregiver or health professional, babies begin experiencing safe complementary foods while milk feeding continues.

The spoken lesson

"Food helps the body grow, move, learn, and stay healthy. In the early months, babies usually receive human milk, infant formula made for babies, or another feeding plan advised for them. Around six months, when a baby is ready, a caregiver may begin offering safe, soft foods while milk feeding continues. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein foods can provide different nutrients. A caregiver prepares food safely and stays close while the baby eats. When a baby turns away or closes the mouth, the caregiver notices. Food is offered with care, not pressure. Food helps the body grow and work." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use realistic food images and simple explanations. Do not advertise formula, packaged baby food, supplements, restaurants, or commercial products. Do not present food as a reward or entertainment.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
