What your child will discover

Help the child understand that milk is an important source of food and fluid during infancy. For most babies during the first year, milk feeding means human milk, appropriately prepared infant formula, or another medically directed option. Do not imply that ordinary cow’s milk, plant beverages, or homemade mixtures are interchangeable with infant feeding products.

The spoken lesson

"Milk is important food and fluid for a baby. Some babies receive human milk. Some babies receive infant formula made especially for infants. Some babies follow another feeding plan advised by a health professional. Families may feed babies in different ways, and every baby deserves safe, attentive care. Milk provides fluid, energy, and nutrients for growth. A caregiver holds the baby securely and notices signs of hunger and fullness. Bottles are never propped or left with a baby alone. Formula is prepared exactly as directed. Milk feeds the body, and close, responsive feeding also provides comfort and connection." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Give human-milk and formula-feeding sections equal visual dignity. Do not include slogans, commercial packaging, brand colors, guilt-based language, breastfeeding-versus-formula scoring, or purchase links.
