"Energy systems begin with primary sources. Renewable sources include sunlight, wind, moving water, geothermal heat, biomass, and some ocean energy. They are replenished through natural processes, although their availability and impacts vary. Coal, petroleum, natural gas, and uranium are non-renewable resources. Fossil fuels release stored chemical energy through combustion, while nuclear fission releases energy from atomic nuclei. Electricity and hydrogen are secondary energy carriers made from primary sources. No energy system has zero impact. We compare climate, pollution, water, land, wildlife, waste, safety, cost, reliability, and access. Energy sources involve different resources, conversions, benefits, limits, and impacts." Avoid current political messaging, outdated statistics, perfect-clean-energy claims, nuclear fear imagery, fossil-fuel promotion, or product advertising.
