What your child will discover
Help the child understand that a family is a group of people connected through care, responsibility, relationship, and belonging. Families can include mothers, fathers, grandparents, guardians, siblings, relatives, adoptive parents, foster caregivers, stepparents, or other trusted people. Do not assume every family has the same structure or that every family member lives in the same home.

The spoken lesson
"A family is a group of people connected by care, responsibility, and belonging. A family may include a mother, father, guardian, grandparent, brother, sister, relative, or another trusted caregiver. Some children live with one caregiver. Some live with several family members. Some family members live in another home or far away. Families do not all look the same. What matters is that trusted people care, protect, listen, and help. Caregiver, point to the people in this child's family and say their names. These are people who belong in the child's family story." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use large touch targets, realistic family photographs, minimal text, rounded cards, soft natural colors, and slow animations. Avoid presenting one family structure as ideal. Do not use quizzes that label an unfamiliar family structure as incorrect. Support reduced-motion settings and include meaningful alt text.

Make it real
Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
