What your child will discover

Help the child understand that food may be warm, cool, hot, or cold depending on how it was cooked, stored, or prepared. Teach that comfortably warm or cool food may be eaten, while very hot food can burn.

The spoken lesson

"Food can be hot, warm, cool, or cold. Cooking can make food very hot. Very hot food can burn the mouth and skin. A caregiver keeps the child away from hot pots, stirs the food, waits, and checks a small amount before serving. Some food heats unevenly, so one part may be hotter than another. The child waits and does not test hot food. Cool or cold food may be safe when it has been stored and prepared correctly. Caregiver checks. Child waits. Then the food can be served safely." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use realistic heat cues without flames near the child. Do not simulate touching hot food, burning, crying, or emergency injury. Never represent color alone as proof of temperature.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
