What your child will discover

Help the child understand the four main food-safety actions: clean, separate, cook, and chill. Teach that food can carry harmful germs even when it looks or smells normal.

The spoken lesson

"Food safety has four important actions: clean, separate, cook, and chill. Clean hands, utensils, surfaces, fruits, and vegetables appropriately. Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from foods that are ready to eat. Cook foods thoroughly, and let the caregiver use a food thermometer when needed. Refrigerate perishable food and leftovers promptly. Harmful germs may be present even when food looks or smells normal. Children can wash hands and help with a safe clean task, but raw foods, heat, knives, and chemicals belong to adults. Clean, separate, cook, and chill." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use four equally prominent cards and realistic kitchen separation. Avoid disgust imagery, child handling raw food, fake germ elimination, or commercial kitchen products.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
