What your child will discover
Help the child understand that cameras detect light and microphones detect sound-driven vibration. Devices convert those signals into analogue or digital representations that can be stored, edited, copied, transmitted, and played back.

The spoken lesson
"A camera records information carried by light. A lens focuses light, an aperture controls the amount, and an image sensor converts the light into electrical information. A digital image uses pixels to represent colour and brightness. Video records a sequence of frames. A microphone records sound. Sound waves move a diaphragm, and a transducer converts the movement into an electrical signal that can be stored as audio data. Recordings can be edited, copied, transmitted, and combined, so they do not always show a complete or unaltered event. Ask before recording and before sharing. Cameras record patterns of light; microphones record patterns created by sound." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use conceptual diagrams and blank devices. Avoid live recording, facial analysis, celebrity imagery, secret-camera scenarios, or copyrighted recorded media.

Make it real
Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
