What your child will discover

Help the child understand that families often have several regular eating times during the day. Breakfast commonly happens after waking, lunch around the middle of the day, and dinner or the evening meal later, but families may use different names and schedules.

The spoken lesson

"Families often organize eating into meals. Breakfast commonly happens after waking in the morning. Lunch often happens near the middle of the day. Dinner, or the evening meal, happens later. Families use different names, foods, and schedules. Rice, bread, porridge, noodles, vegetables, beans, eggs, fruit, fish, meat, and many other foods may appear at any meal. Before eating, we wash hands and sit safely. The caregiver offers suitable food, and the child stops when full. Meals help organize eating through the day." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use culturally diverse meals and realistic family schedules. Do not privilege Western breakfast foods, enforce exact times, promote commercial cereal, or use meal-completion scores.

Make it real

Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
