"A machine is a designed system that transfers or changes energy, force, motion, material, or information to perform a function. Some machines are controlled directly by people. Automation allows selected steps to operate through programmed rules. An open-loop system follows an instruction without measuring the result. A feedback system uses a sensor to compare the result with a target and adjust the action. Automation can improve speed, precision, access, and repeatability, but it can also fail through damaged parts, incorrect rules, bad sensor information, or unexpected conditions. Machines perform functions; automation applies rules and feedback, while people remain responsible for safety." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Show machines as systems rather than magical devices. Use slow symbolic motion, clear safety zones, and a reduced-motion option. Avoid live control, factory games, child-operated machinery, or automatic-equals-perfect messaging.
