What your child will discover

Help the child understand that muscles are tissues that produce force by contracting. Different muscle types move bones, pump blood, move food and other materials through organs, support posture, and help breathing.

The spoken lesson

"Muscles are tissues that can contract and create force. Skeletal muscles usually pull on bones through tendons and help you walk, reach, smile, chew, balance, and hold posture. Smooth muscles work inside organs and blood vessels, often without you thinking about them. Cardiac muscle forms much of the heart and contracts rhythmically to pump blood. Muscles usually work in coordinated groups. Nerves carry instructions between the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. Active play, varied food, fluids, rest, and safe practice support muscles. Muscles contract, relax, and work together to help the body function." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use ordinary movement and diverse bodies. Avoid bodybuilding imagery, flexing competition, strength scores, medical pathology, supplements, or adult exercise equipment.
