Understand responsibility as caring for an appropriate task, choice, promise, belonging, safety rule, or repair while asking for help when needed.
Help the child understand that responsibility means taking care of an appropriate duty or responding to the effects of one’s choices. Teach that responsibility includes asking for help and does not mean carrying adult burdens.
"Responsibility means caring for an appropriate task, choice, promise, belonging, or safety rule. You may put away a book, carry a cup carefully, tell an adult about a spill, or help repair something you damaged. A responsibility should fit your age, body, and abilities. Asking for help is responsible. Adults remain responsible for medicine, money, cooking, dangerous tools, emergencies, and protecting children. You are never responsible for an adult's unsafe behaviour, dangerous secret, or family conflict. Do the safe part you can, ask for help, and repair what you can." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use small realistic responsibilities and supportive adults. Avoid excessive chore lists, adultification, perfection, shame, reward dependency, or unsafe independence.
Pause, point, name what you notice, and connect the idea to something familiar in your child's day. Repetition, a calm voice, shared attention and dependable care matter more than finishing quickly.
