"The Moon does not truly change shape. It remains a round world. The Sun always illuminates approximately half of it, and we see different parts of that illuminated half as the Moon orbits Earth. The cycle begins with new Moon, then waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent. Waxing means the visible illuminated part is increasing. Waning means it is decreasing. Ordinary Moon phases are not caused by Earth's shadow. Earth's shadow reaches the Moon only during a lunar eclipse. The phase cycle repeats in about twenty-nine and a half days. Moon phases are changing views of the same round Moon as it orbits Earth." DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: Use a three-dimensional orbit model, not only a row of icons. Clearly connect each orbital position to the Earth observer's view. Avoid universal left-right waxing rules, Earth-shadow misconceptions, rapid animation, or false scale.
